So that people’s leisure activities don’t turn into a fire hazard for the forests…

The Department of Forestry at UzhNU, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is the only department in Transcarpathia that offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Forestry

The semester is coming to an end, and soon we’ll be able to fully enjoy summer with all its charms—trips to the river, the pool, picnics with friends, and some of us might even get lucky enough to sunbathe by the sea. While relaxing in the forest, let’s not forget to appreciate Transcarpathia’s forest landscapes. Because the statistics are grim: last year, nearly 50 hectares of forests under the jurisdiction of the Transcarpathian Regional Forestry and Hunting Administration were damaged by fires. This spring was also a “hot” one for the region’s foresters and rescue workers.
According to reports from the State Emergency Service Administration in the Transcarpathian region, fires raged in the Uzhhorod, Mukachevo, Velyky Berezny, Perechyn, and Vynogradiv districts.

By the end of May 2019, there had been 27 forest fires in the region (affecting an area of about 70 hectares). Moreover, half of that—specifically 35 hectares of dry grass, forest litter, and shrubs—was destroyed in a single incident during a fire in the village of Tsyhanivtsi within the Uzhhorod Military Forestry, which occurred on April 1. Fifty people fought the fire for 16 hours!
